Uterine fibroids are common benign tumors, but their presence during pregnancy can lead to several complications.

1. Increase in Size

Fibroids often increase in size during pregnancy due to hormonal changes.

2. Uterine Contraction Issues

They may cause irregular uterine contractions, which can interfere with the normal course of pregnancy.

3. Risk of Miscarriage or Preterm Labour

Irregular contractions can sometimes result in early miscarriage or preterm labour.

4. Associated Pregnancy Complications

Fibroids may predispose the pregnancy to:

  • IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Restriction)

  • Abruptio Placentae

  • Malpresentation

These complications often increase the chances of caesarean section.

5. Rare Complication – Red Degeneration

A rare but important complication is Red Degeneration of Fibroid, which presents as abdominal pain, sometimes with fever, malaise, and body ache.It is usually managed conservatively, and surgery during pregnancy is rarely required.

Conclusion

Whenever possible, it is always advisable to treat fibroids before planning a pregnancy to ensure a safer maternal and fetal outcome.
