Adenomyosis is a condition in which the inner lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows into the muscular layer of the uterus (myometrium). This leads to a bulky, tender uterus and can significantly affect a woman’s quality of life.

Common Symptoms

Adenomyosis may cause:

  • Lower abdominal or pelvic pain

  • Heavy and prolonged menstrual bleeding

  • Dysmenorrhoea (painful periods)

  • Infertility

  • A feeling of bloating or fullness in the lower abdomen

  • Dyspareunia (pain during sexual intercourse) in some patients

Risk Factors

Adenomyosis is more commonly seen in:

  • Women aged 30–45 years

  • Patients with a history of myomectomy

  • Patients with repeated dilatation and curettage (D & C) procedures

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on symptoms, age, and fertility plans:

  1. NSAIDs for pain relief in mild cases

  2. Hormonal therapy in selected patients

  3. Hysterectomy in severe, completed-family cases

  4. For women who wish to preserve the uterus or plan pregnancy, laparoscopic removal of localized adenomyoma (adenomyomectomy) is a valuable option
