Adenomyosis is a condition in which the inner lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows into the muscular layer of the uterus (myometrium). This leads to a bulky, tender uterus and can significantly affect a woman’s quality of life.
Common Symptoms
Adenomyosis may cause:
Lower abdominal or pelvic pain
Heavy and prolonged menstrual bleeding
Dysmenorrhoea (painful periods)
Infertility
A feeling of bloating or fullness in the lower abdomen
Dyspareunia (pain during sexual intercourse) in some patients
Risk Factors
Adenomyosis is more commonly seen in:
Women aged 30–45 years
Patients with a history of myomectomy
Patients with repeated dilatation and curettage (D & C) procedures
Treatment Options
Treatment depends on symptoms, age, and fertility plans:
NSAIDs for pain relief in mild cases
Hormonal therapy in selected patients
Hysterectomy in severe, completed-family cases
For women who wish to preserve the uterus or plan pregnancy, laparoscopic removal of localized adenomyoma (adenomyomectomy) is a valuable option
